With Ms. Hollingsworth taking over the school's Pharmacy Technician Capstone, and Mr. Winkelman already sporting a full load of classes, it was necessary for our math department to grow this fall. Enter Mrs. Ann Biason, a teacher who is no stranger to our school's community.
Mrs. Biason, whose daughter Addison graduated from MMACHS in 2016, brings 28 years of teaching experience to our building, having split her classroom time between the high school and 8th grade levels both here in Meridian, and in Las Vegas, NV.
"As long as I can remember, I always thought I would be a teacher and I commonly played school as a child," she says, "Growing up with my parents teaching math and computer classes, I was well aware of the teaching profession, with its demands and rewards."
But like many educators, her path didn't take her straight to the classroom.
"Even though I came from a family of educators, I actually began college as an accounting major because it was something that came easy to me and I enjoyed the business classes in high school."
Her experience as a tutor during this time, however, encouraged her to reconsider her career.
"After working for several years as a bookkeeper at a retail store, I realized sitting behind a desk all day just wasn’t for me. Something I did enjoy though was being a math tutor and my students commonly told me that I should be a teacher."
That choice led her to obtaining a bachelor's degree in secondary mathematics education and a master's degree in educational technology, both from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Recently, Mrs. Biason has served as an assistant school librarian at Meridian Middle School where she was able to not only teach library classes, but also flex her technology muscles. Now, she will be putting her knowledge and experience to work primarily with our incoming freshmen, as she takes on our entire load of Math 1 classes.
Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Biason is very active in the Meridian community.
"I have been involved with our church youth group for many years, including participating in week-long mission trips to impoverished areas, working at the food bank, and more. Being in Scouts for more than a decade gave me many more experiences with working in the community as well as love for being outdoors."
This year, she plans on bringing a collaborative learning environment into her classes.
"I enjoy setting the stage for a respectful learning environment where we focus on problem-solving and have the freedom to make mistakes. Effective use of classroom participation and group learning help all of us succeed."
We're thrilled to have Mrs. Biason as part of our staff this year, a sentiment she shares.
"I am excited to be at a school that focuses on STEM classes and STEM careers." she says. "I have seen the parent side of life at MMACHS, and now I get to be on the staff side.
Make sure to welcome Mrs. Biason when you see her in the hallways this month!
