New Program, New Teacher: Meet Sherri McCluskey

By: MMACHS Staff

The 2024-2025 school year marks the start of a new Medical Assisting program at MMACHS, and leading us into this new frontier is Sherri McCluskey, a Medical Assistant with 30 years of industry experience.

Ms. McCluskey, who is originally from Florida, got her start a bit by chance. After working as a file clerk for an orthopedic surgeon who lived next door, Sherri had the chance to see the clinical side of healthcare and was immediately hooked.

"I found that the clinical side of the office was more intriguing and wanted more! I was given the opportunity to go to a Medical Assisting program where I flourished and really fell in love with patient care."

Since then, she has had the opportunity to work with practitioners in a wide array of specialties.

"I have been a Medical Assistant since 1995. I have worked in Orthopedics, Primary Care, Urgent Care and most recently, Oncology/Hematology. I spent most of my MA career in Primary Care, Internal Medicine."

While making the switch from industry to the classroom can be a lot to process, Ms. McCluskey says she has had wonderful examples to draw from in the mentors she had along the way.

"I was fortunate to work with three physicians who took the time to explain disease processes or provide explanations whenever I had questions, which seemed to be all the time early on in my Medical Assisting career. Because of their dedication to teaching, I have adopted the same approach to teaching."

So far, the staff and students at MMACHS have made the transition as easy as possible.

"(The first couple of days have been) exciting yet nerve-racking at times, the seniors have been polite, respectful, and seem very eager to learn! My students seem genuinely excited about learning and getting into the industry as medical assistants."

We're so excited to have Ms. McCluskey leading our kids in this new opportunity!
